1.Particleboard

Both plain and pre-laminated particle boards(PLBP) are available in the market.

2. MDF
Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrillator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.
MDF is generally denser than plywood.
Disadvantages
- MDF is comparatively weaker than wood. Furniture made up of MDF doesn’t last long. Though MDF is cheap, it, on the other hand, is a loss of money.
- MDF can crack or split under extreme stress.
- MDF absorbs water more quicker than wood. So MDF may swell and everyone has to become conscious of using MDF.
- MDF doesn’t take nails and screws easily. During nailing, the fraction may appear around it. Pilot holes should be used while screwing.
- MDF contains VOC, containing urea formaldehyde, that can cause irritation to the lungs and eyes.
- Dust produced during the manufacture of MDF is very harmful to breathing.
3. MR or commercial Grade ply- (IS code: 303)
MR(Moisture Resistance) Plywood consists of sheets of wood glued together with grains of adjacent layers arranged at right angles or at a wide angle.
4. BWR Grade ply- (IS code: 303)
BWR(Boiling Water Resistance) MR grade is not waterproof in nature.BWR grade is waterproof in nature but it is not as waterproof as BWP plywood.
5. BWP Grade ply- (IS code: 710)
BWP(Boiling Water Proof) When compared to MR and BWR grade plywood, BWP grade has superior waterproof quality.
What gives this plywood such a high waterproofing quality is the use of undiluted synthetic plastic resins during its manufacturing process.

6.HDF
Hardboard, also called high-density fiberboard (HDF), is a type of fiberboard, which is an engineered wood product.
It is similar to particle board and medium-density fiberboard but is denser and much stronger and harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibres that have been highly compressed.
7.HDHMR
HDHMR stands for High-Density High Moisture Resistance. It is basically an upgraded term of plywood, used to develop tough and robust wooden usage.
Explaining the definition, the HDHMR board is made by combining fibre chips, and forest wood waste through a homogeneously constructed process.
The advantage of using HDHMR for doors is the bending property of this is less compared to plywood.
8. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Foam boards
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Foam boards, manufactured using Petroleum products, resins, and inorganic chemicals are most commonly used as an alternative for wooden sheets to manufacture doors, furniture, outdoor advertising boards, and shelves, to name a few.

10.Blockboard
Blockboard is made up of softwood strips and veneers.
They are manufactured by placing softwood strips edge to edge and sandwiching them between veneers and then this sandwich is glued together with high pressure.

Plywood is an engineered wood made by glueing together thin veneer sheets with resin under high pressure.

Plywood is the most used wood for home interiors, it is the sheets of wood pasted together to make plywood.
There are many specifications under plywood based on the chemical treatment of the wood and the glue used to fix the sheets together.

The plywood is further divided into two grade that is MR grade and BWR grade. IS 303 is the ISI or BIS specification for the plywood.

It is also known as commercial ply, this ply can be used everywhere except in the kitchen and the bathroom.
BWR Grade: BWR Grade refers to Boiling Water Resistant Ply, this ply is also known as Marine ply and is been used mostly in the kitchen and Bathroom interior.
Types of plywood
There are over 18 types of plywood distinguished based on the type of wood used, application and process. However, let us concentrate on the three basic types — MR ply, BWR/BWP ply and Marine ply.
Moisture Resistant Plywood, also known as commercial ply by local vendors, is used extensively in interiors.

However, this is not waterproof.
Boiling Water Resistant and Boiling Water Proof Ply is most favoured for interior and exterior as well.

Marine Ply is often associated with BWR and BWP ply by carpenters.
But the similarities are minimum. The material is of superior quality and is waterproof to a great extent.
Thus, its applications are found mainly in boat building and industries where exposure to water is high.
So, the myth that marine ply is the best material for kitchens is pointless unless you’re planning to keep your kitchen immersed in water all the time.
Thickness and plywood grade
Thickness
Ply means layer. The thickness of the sheet is determined by the ply. More ply creates a thicker and stronger board.
The minimum number of plies is 3-ply and can go up to 5 or more.
Plywood with fewer plies are thinner and weaker even if they’re the same thickness.
- 3-ply: These sheets are 2 to 3 mm thick and are the most common type of plywood for home interiors.
- 5-ply: This plywood is the most versatile option which is 4 mm thick. This type of plywood works great for indoor and outdoor furniture and decorative boards.
- ·Multi-ply: This plywood has 7 or more layers. It’s strong and durable enough for permanent structures like roofing.
Grade
Plywood often comes with grades that can determine its quality and appearance of it.
- A-grade: Ideal for furniture pieces and cabinets, A-grade plywood has a smooth and sanded surface with minor defects.
- B-grade: This grade of plywood is similar to A grade with a few knots however, the defects can go upto 1 inch across.
- C-grade: This grade is unsanded with minor knots and defects like discolouration. They are ideal for structures where appearance is not important.
- D-grade: Similar to C-grade, D-grade plywood is unsanded and has snags that have not been repaired.

Commercial ply can be used in areas that are not exposed to moisture, while water-resistant ply can be used in kitchens and bathrooms for greater durability.
The best material to use for kitchens, and wardrobes are BWP grade plywood for carcass and HDHMR or again BWP ply for doors. Never recommend MDF, HDF, commercial ply, or particle board for the interior unless you want to reduce the cost drastically.
These materials cannot give quality or long life compared to BWP/ BWR plywood.
