In this modern world, many factors have been influencing a finished product’s look. Many different uses and functions require different types of finishing materials.

Plywood products that are used for visible parts of furniture and cabinets need to be finished, just as any other wood pieces would.

The finish improves the look of the piece, as well as providing the wood with needed protection from dirt and spills.

Proper finish visibly enhances the finished piece, as well as helping it to last longer.

When we’re talking about “finishing plywood,” we’re normally talking about finishes that show off the grain in the face veneer of the wood product or even the edge of the plywood on some products with a high veneer count.

While paint meets the technical definition of being a finish, it is not common to call it “painting plywood,” or “finishing plywood.”

VENEER

Wood veneers and laminates are among the most commonly used decorative materials for surfacing cabinetry, furniture, walls, ceilings and much else.

Wood veneers are thin layers of wood precisely cut from a thicker log while laminates are multi-layered sheets of paper and plastic resins glued together into one.

Both veneers and laminates are pasted on a sub-base of solid wood or wood composite plywood board or MDF (medium-density fibreboard) that is usually the original surface (of cabinetry, tables, etc.).

The veneer is a very thin treated slice of wood that is obtained from trees and is categorized as sliced or rotary–cut veneers.

Approximately 90% or above of veneers are cut by the simple rotary cutting method.’

After being cut they become wood slices which impart a warm, natural look to the surfaces when they are put in use.

Majorly used for furniture and panelling, they are considered the best option for residential use. In today’s market, it offers a range of veneers that are used for wall panelling too.

The thickness of veneers is an important factor in determining their durability. It is said that the more thickness it’ll have, the more durable it’ll be. Additionally, during any repair, it is the thickness that ensures whether the damage could be fixed or not.

Different shades, colours and textures (that can be smoked and fumed) are available in the market today.

This is the most economical way to use timber and can easily be recycled when used later.

They have oil-based finishes and water-based finishes as well. They work well with lacquer finishes too.

LAMINATES

Laminate is a man-made product that is made to resemble wood. It is an artificial material that is printed with a colour or pattern. We describe here the strengths and weaknesses of Laminates.

Laminates can be categorised into the most preferred high-pressure laminates or HPL and less durable low-pressure laminates or LPL.

The topmost layer of each sheet comprises a decorative print or colourful sheet which is finished with a plastic coating that gives the laminate a shiny look.

Highly Durable

Laminates are extremely durable, waterproof and resistant to stains and heat.

This makes laminates highly suitable for busy areas like kitchens, bathroom cabinets and children’s bedrooms which are subjected to a lot of wear and tear.

However, laminates are prone to chipping and cracks and once damaged cannot be repaired.

Maintenance

Laminates are easier to maintain in comparison to a veneer finish because they can retain their look for many years.

The routine cleaning and maintenance of a laminate finish include wiping the surface with a wet cloth or soapy water.

Designs

Laminates are available in a vast number of colours, designs, and finishes.

One of the biggest advantages is that these enhance the look and feel of natural materials like stone, wood, leather, natural silk, and so on.

Some of the latest varieties of laminates are also available in flame retardant and antibacterial finishes.

Verdict

If you prefer natural materials and the timeless look and warmth of real wood, then go in for a veneer finish. Laminates are best suited for modern and colourful interiors that are easy to maintain.

ACRYLIC FINISH

Acrylic is a trending new material that is primarily used in modular kitchens because it imparts a high-end modern look.

An acrylic finish is made of plastic resins and it is readily available in the form of sheets.

What’s the best finish for your kitchen cabinets?

One possible option which is trending today is a combination of both acrylic and laminate finishes.

Since most lighting tends to highlight the upper cabinets, use acrylic finishes on them for a glossy, attractive look.

Laminate is a good choice for lower cabinets since they are likely to see more wear and tear.

You can choose textures and colours that complement each other for a coordinated look.

Decide on the best finish for your kitchen cabinets depending on your use, budget and tastes.

The right choice will enhance the overall look and feel of your modular kitchen.

Aesthetics

·         A premium high-gloss option, acrylic is the preferred option for high-end kitchens. It can add visual space and an inviting appeal to your kitchen

·         While laminates are available in glossy options, these are not as reflective as an acrylic finish. As a result, the overall look is more muted and less striking

Colour and Varieties

·         Acrylic finishes are available in a wide range of vibrant colours which retain their colour and brightness for years

·         However, the variety available in laminate finishes is higher and includes matte, glossy, and ultra-high gloss.  Apart from colours, these are also available in various textures, including wood

Maintenance and Durability:

·         Scratch-resistant acrylic finishes do not tarnish, de-laminate or fade away with time; they maintain their smooth and glossy appearance. However, this means that fingerprint marks, dirt and stains are more visible, and require regular cleaning

·         Laminate finishes are relatively more hard-wearing and durable when compared to acrylic. Laminates are also moisture and heat-resistant and can be treated for antibacterial properties

PU FINISH

PU (polyurethane) is an acrylic-based clear coating paint also called a lacquer finish. which is on the higher side than laminate, where 6 coatings of PU are done on a thin sheet of matt white laminate in air packed room.

You can choose any colour on the surface for your kitchen cabinets, it is weather resistant and also easy to maintain and clean.

PU finish is done on paint booths in a dust-free and temperature-controlled environment.

Any painting done at the site in a dusty environment will never give a good result and PU finish.

People always cheat customers the local painting as PU or Lacquer and take more money.

PU painting is costly compared to Acrylic, Veneer and laminates.
